Attack of the Radioactive Giant Jellyfish

OK, well, I lied on that post about being a suicide blogger. I decided that I am going for the sensationalism! We're doomed! Giant Radioactive Jellyfish are Attacking Japan's Nuclear Power Plants!

Death and destruction! The world holds its breath as Japan waits for the inevitable Armageddon and apocalyptic end!... Read on!

As if Japan doesn't already have enough troubles to deal with concerning nuclear power plants and hyperventilating journalists telling us that it's the end of the world, now we're under attack by jellyfish.... Again!

No, these are not the giant jellyfish that, quite coincidentally, attacked Japan and that I reported on the very morning of the March 11 earthquake and tsunami lead to the nuclear accident at Fukushima nuclear power plant! I faithfully wrote about it in Japan's Attack of the Giant Jellyfish from Space that reported:

Sometimes truth is stranger than fiction. It's true! It has been reported from Hiroshima, of all places, that hordes of millions of giant jellyfish have invaded the seas around Western Japan. These jellyfish are massive with some weighing in at over 210 kilograms!

Don't believe me? Well here's proof! The UPI reports:
HIROSHIMA, Japan, March 9 (UPI) -- Giant jellyfish, thought to be from Chinese waters, have been floating into the Sea of Japan and wreaking havoc on the Japanese fishing industry, officials say.

Millions of the creatures, each weighing almost 450 pounds with a bell reaching almost 7 feet across and trailing a tangle of long, stinging tentacles, have moved into the Sea of Japan every summer since 2002, LiveScience.com reported Wednesday.

Armadas of giant jellyfish, Nemopilemanomurai, probably originate in the coastal waters of China, Shin-ichi Uye of Hiroshima University said. Uye said he has documented the movement of young giant jellyfish from Chinese waters into the Sea of Japan on currents, and the growth of these jellyfish along the way.

Go to here to also see news photos and video footage of these giant monsters wrecking havoc on the Japanese coast.

But now, as the summer heat is upon us, along with the Japanese people and businesses lowering their electrical consumption by 30 ~ 40%, Japanese nuclear power plants are working over time to fill Japan's soaring electricity needs as the air conditioners need to be turned on.

So what timing! Just like out of some Japanese monster movie from the 1960's, some nuclear power plants in Shimane prefecture have come under attack from jellyfish! You cannot make this stuff up!

Reuters reports:

TOKYO, June 24 (Reuters) - Jellyfish sounded the retreat on Friday after blocking an all-important seawater cooling pipe at a western Japanese nuclear power plant, the plant operator said.
Several Japanese utilities are struggling to meet peak summer demand due to safety concerns after a March 11 earthquake and tsunami triggered a nuclear crisis at Tokyo Electric Power Co's plant in Fukushima, north of Tokyo.
The jellyfish managed to block the cooling system at one reactor at the Shimane plant on Thursday, prompting the operator to lower its generation capacity by 6 percent.
The Hiroshima-based operator, Chugoku Electric Power Co , said on Friday the jellyfish, common in Japanese waters during the summer, had backed off and operation was back to normal.
It was the first time jellyfish, about 20-30 cm long (8-12 inches), had interrupted operations at the Shimane plant since 1997, a company spokesman said.
See the video here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HRjEuRHfxyo The news report also added a note that I have written on before. It said:

Not resuming operations at the reactors would lead to power shortages around Japan, while replacing all energy generated by nuclear reactors with thermal power generators would raise costs for industry and consumers.
"Would raise costs for consumers"!? Probably an award, or at least a nomination, for the "Biggest Understatements of 2011 Award."
I'm wondering how the next Keith Harmon Snow, Arnie Gundersen or Michio Kaku clone will twist this attack of jellyfish upon a cooler at a nuclear power plant into the next coming of the Four Horsemen of Apocalypse?

Men in Japan Wake Up With a Woody. The Girl's Love it Too!

I love living in Japan. Amongst being in a society with civilized people, great food and tons of things to do, Japan has the weirdest festivals and shrines. You just got to love it.

Japan has festivals all the time. One of my favorites is the Penis Festival in Kawasaki. This is a fertility rite that started many years ago when Japan was a desperately poor country and bearing children was difficult. It is much like the Boob Shrine.

Japanese girls love the Penis
Festival too!

Here's another festival that was held day before yesterday. It's the Naked Festival down in Okayama near Hiroshima.

The headline of this article cracked me up. From the Japan Times:

Men reach for sacred wood at 'Naked Festival'

Oh yes. To be young and frisky again. I remember when I was young, I would wake up with wood every morning. Ah those memories. But, no! That's not what they are talking about here in this story. They are talking about another bizarre festival. Read on:

About 9,000 men dressed in nothing but white "fundoshi" (loin cloths) gathered Saturday night in the city of Okayama for an offbeat competition to chase after two sacred sticks thrown by a monk. The men who manage to snatch the wood and leave with it from Seidaiji Temple in Higashi Ward are recognized as the "lucky men" of the year. The Seidaiji Eyo competition, also known as the "Naked Festival," is widely recognized as one of the "three oddest festivals" in the nation.

Guy's all grabbing for wood at this year's Naked Festival

Survival Under Atomic Attack film (1951)

By Mike in Tokyo Rogers
This short movie was created by the US Office of Civil Defense. I think it goes a long way in showing just how nutty these people we have in government are. It is, in some parts funny, in others just plain astounding... The propaganda purposes are always in forefront.

Especially the part, when referring to what happened in Japan after the atomic bombing, where they say that "That a large majority of people exposed to nuclear radiation  recovered completely including those who suffered radiation sickness." For more on that, see "Hiroshima and Nagasaki. What People Experienced."

Wikipedia says abut the US Office of Civil Defense:

The Office of Civil Defense (OCD) was an agency of the United States Department of Defense from 1961-64. It replaced the Office of Civil and Defense Mobilization. The organization was abolished on July 20, 1979, pursuant to Executive Order 12148. It was a predecessor to theFederal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

Oh, great! They became FEMA. You know, that fine organization that handled the New Orleans area after hurricane Katrina...

This is a fascinating short film. All you have to do is hear the opening narration to know that you are in for a massive dose of 1960's US government propaganda.

"Let's us face, without panic, the reality of our time; the fact that atom bombs may soon be dropped on our cities. And let us prepare for survival by understand the weapon that threatens us..."

Think about this for a second and then you can understand why we should fear what our leaders are doing in our names: was there every anything so damned important that the Soviet Union did that would warrant us risking having our cities and citizens evaporated like the hundreds of thousands at Hiroshima and Nagasaki?

This is Powerful! Alternative Views: Hiroshima & Nagasaki. What People Experienced

This is some pretty heavy stuff from the Alternative Information Network. I'll let the program's own description explain.

Three short works are shown which reveal in powerful and touching reality what it was like to endure the atomic bombings in Japan.

First is a 22 minute documentary, Hiroshima-Nagasaki," which contains movie footage in the cities after the bombs exploded. The documentary is so explicit and powerful that it was suppressed by the U.S. government for many years.

Next is a short work containing the drawings of children and adults depicting what they saw and experienced. Finally, an animated film is presented which is shown in Hiroshima each year to school children. Also provided is a review of a book which recounts the attempts by the American government to suppress the full details of the realities of what happened in Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Definitely pay attention from 29:45. Here, they describe the first symptoms of  radiation sickness and vegetation becoming mutated in the cities that experienced the bomb blasts.

"Hospitals filled with patients who did not seem sick before. They were vomiting, bleeding from the gums, and purple spots appeared on their skin. Some could not be touched because their skin slipped off in huge globe-like pieces. At first, they were quarantined. Victims of some mysterious infectious disease. Gradually, it was understood that the disease was radiation sickness and these people were special victims of the atomic bomb.... By the 20th day after the bomb, vegetation began to grow wildly in the wreckage of the cities."

(Advance to 19:24 to see the films)

This cannot ever happen again. Let's work to make sure that it doesn't. Also, I'd like to add that it is too bad that the Alternative Information Network is no longer around. They were way ahead of their time. Had they been around when the Internet started, they might have been very successful.

Marketing Japan: Alper Kul's "Only a Bomb to Nagasaki?"

By Mike in Tokyo Rogers

I have found a wonderfully done musical piece that has been edited to video for you by an artist named Alper Kul. Alper Kul is from Turkey and he works with electronic musical instruments such as the piano.

Artist/composer Alper Kul

Just today, Alper Kul uploaded a fine work that I am proud to introduce to you. It is called "Only a Bomb to Nagasaki?" and is simply beautiful and powerful a the same time.

It brought great emotions and tears to my eyes. Please watch this and enjoy!

ONLY A BOMB TO NAGAZAKI ? BY ALPER KUL from Alper KUL on Vimeo.

It is true that some of the scenes are Hiroshima and not Nagasaki but I think that doesn't detract one bit from the message and the beautiful music. I expect to be hearing more from Alper Kul in the future.

Alper Kul has a Facebook page here. http://www.facebook.com/pages/Alper-KUL/56674797346?v=wall

His Alper Kul Myspace is here.

If you write to him, tell him Mike in Tokyo Rogers sent you.
