Is Fukushima is the biggest industrial catastrophe in the history of mankind? A Comparison

Many pundits and supposed experts have claimed that Fukushima "is the biggest industrial catastrophe in the history of mankind."

Sorry to inform you, but that is completely false. To even entertain that notion for a second is incredibly arrogant and ethno-centric thinking. It is ignorant and shows a complete lack of knowledge on human history. Be very suspicious of those who make these kinds of idiotic claims as they certainly are not steeped in factual information. In this article, I will let you be the judge of that.

SILHOUETTES - GET A JOB

Here is a list from Wikipedia on industrial disasters. This is a heavily edited list. There are many more at the Wikipedia site. I edited out many disasters as I figured that if there weren't at least a few hundred casualties, then it can't be much of a disaster (no disrespect to those who lost loved ones). Especially when you consider that, according to the International Labor Organization, at least 12,250 Chinese workers die in industrial accidents a month, every month, and an estimated 1.2 million people are killed in road crashes each year, and as many as 50 million are injured, a few dozen killed in an industrial accident seems like small potatoes.

So far the death total from the Fukushima nuclear accident is zero. How many can you count from the list below that are much worse than that?

Chemical industry
Construction industry
  • January 20, 1909: Chicago Crib Disaster. 100 men died.
Defense industry
Energy industry
  • August, 1975: The Banqiao Dam flood in China. 100,000 immediately killed, plus over 150,000 died of subsequent epidemic diseases and famine, total deal toll around 250,000, making it the worst technical disaster ever happened in history.
  • March 16, 1978: The Amoco Cadiz spill. An oil tanker sank spilling of 68,684,000 US Gallons of crude oil (nearly ten times that of Exxon Valdez). This is the largest oil spill of its kind (from an oil tanker) in history.
  • April 26, 1986: Chernobyl disaster. At the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in Prypiat, Ukraine a test on reactor number four goes out of control, resulting in a nuclear meltdown. The ensuing steam explosion and fire killed up to 50 people with estimates that there may be between 4,000 additional cancer deaths over time.
Food industry
    Manufacturing industry
    Mining industry
There are many more disasters and accident listed at the Wikipedia site. There's thousands, if not hundreds of thousands, more that are not listed on Wikipedia. Lots of accidents and disasters. Lots of deaths. Fukushima nuclear reactor accident deaths as of today, four months after the disaster began? 0. Zero. None. Nada. Zip. 全然. 無し. ありません。

Oh, and if you want a disaster that displaced more than 1,000 people and is still going on decades later, here's an interesting one:

    • May 1962: The Centralia, Pennsylvania coal mine fire began, forcing the gradual evacuation of the Centralia borough. The fire continues to burn in the abandoned borough in 2011, 49 years later (emphasis mine).

These are facts. They are etched into history.

People who make claims like, "Fukushima is the biggest industrial catastrophe in the history of mankind" are stating opinions involved with speculation and conjecture. Anyone care to debate the facts?

Fukushima Nuclear Disaster News - Debunking Arnie Gundersen

It's really getting tiring debunking everything that clowns like Arnie Gundersen say about Fukushima. It doesn't matter how many facts or data that I link to or how much I try to fact check what this guy says, people still write really stupid (and childishly rude) stuff to me and challenge me on it.

Of course, I can tell the rude stuff comes from ill-educated hysterical Americans. It's pretty obvious.

What's even more tiring is getting mail from fools who actually believe that things are out of control. It really reminds me of the early days of the Global Warming idiocy. People were foaming at the mouth believing that too because they believed the crap they were told. What was their rationale?

    1) It was a government cover up and conspiracy
    2) "They" were lying to us

Why do people think this way?

    3) Most people are illogical and cannot have an original thought if it were the last thing they ever did

It's a victory for the public education system that it churns out so many people with such a poor level of education.

I don't really mind being challenged on what's written here, but let's stick to the points, if we can, shall we? The lunatic fringe writing stuff to me like what I received yesterday was so totally out of whack that I deleted his comments. (Note: I do enjoy every one's comments and appreciate that they take the time to write them, but please do read the rules on commenting before you write. It is foolish to take ten minutes writing something that gets immediately deleted when you could read the rules in two seconds and make sure that doesn't happen).

Some of these guys actually write comments like this:

"Mike, you are full of sh*t... Care to debate me?"

Hmm.... What an intelligent, polite and marvelous argument this guy puts forth. What a fantastic invitation to debate the points. I can tell, by the quality of his writing, it would be like debating Neanderthal man. I don't know how I can counter such an excellently structured argument...

Perhaps by hitting the table with a crude wooden bat and saying, "Korg no like!"...

Could he possibly mean that he wants to, "debate me on the point of the contents of my body?" If so, no. I do not... If he means that - judging by the excellent logic of his argument shown in his comment - should I debate him on the same level of childish insults as he does by, say, calling his mother various unsavory names? Then, no to that one too.

I'm sure that his mother is a wonderful woman. Most moms are like that.

So, without further ado, here's another article debunking Gundersen. I hope it will be the last, but, alas, suspect it won't. First up, let's be fair. I will show you both anti-atomic power (Gundersen's comments) and "pro"-nuclear power comments. You be the judge.

    From Atomic Insights:

Arnie Gundersen has been making money by spreading fear, uncertainty and doubt about nuclear energy for more than a decade. His career has received a measurable boost since March 11, when a large earthquake and powerful tsunami successfully peeled off most of the many layers of protection at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power station.
Ever since that day, Gundersen has been giving scary interviews in a variety of media outlets that include a number of dire predictions. He claimed that the spent fuel pool for unit 4 had gone dry and that he had the video to prove it. That claim remains available on his web site, so he is apparently standing by his early evaluation despite all evidence that contradicts his claim.
    (snip)
He has been making the rounds of the advertiser supported media recently with stories about the dangers of “hot particles” that are so tiny they cannot be picked up by normal radiation detectors. (Note: Radiation can be measured at extremely low levels, far below the levels that can cause human health effects. There is a reason why doctors inject small amounts radioactive materials into their patients as tracers to assist them in diagnosing organ function – those tracers make bodily systems visible without endangering the patient. If the hot particles are so tiny and dispersed that they cannot be detected, they are nothing to worry about.)
You can read more about Gundersen here at Atomic Insights.
Of course, I also blasted Gundersen for these same ridiculous remarks on the very blog in "Wind Patterns and Rainy Season in Japan" where I derailed his ignorant and completely false claims that "the wind was turning and now blowing radiation towards Tokyo." I also dismantled his absurd claims of "anecdotal evidence" of people having a metallic taste in their mouths was proof of Iodine in the air as a byproduct of radiation in "Metallic Tastes in Mouths Proves Nuclear Disaster! Or Does it?"
Finally, and as an aside, one other reader complained that I bashed Gundersen for his foolish claims of radioactive air filters in cars. The reader claimed that he searched for third-party evidence of this claim by Gundersen and could find nothing. This reader then somehow concluded that this fact was proof that I was making up evidence against Gundersen and trying to discredit him (well, that's what he said. Yeah, I know. The logic is quite convuluted...) But I don't want to keep railing on the educational system of the USA. In that post about car air filters I even showed the results of a search in Japanese for what Gundersen was claiming and found nothing excepting links to his absurd claims. See it here in "Radioactive Air Filters in Cars?"
For today here's more about what Gundersen claimed that is totally disproven by facts on the ground. Gundersen claimed in an article on Al Jazeera:
"So ten to 15 years from now maybe we can say the reactors have been dismantled, and in the meantime you wind up contaminating the water," Gundersen said.
Is this true? You be the judge. Here's today's news from the Nuclear Energy Institute:
TEPCO is making headway in reducing the volume of contaminated water on site. In the last week, the new water filtration system has treated more than 13,000 tons of water. Recycling the treated water into the plant cooling systems also began last week, and the rate of water accumulation is now being reversed. The company says water levels in the basements of the reactor buildings could drop by more than three feet by next month. About 120,000 tons of water have accumulated in basements at the facility and in storage facilities.
This seems to quite directly contradict Gundersen's claims, no?

    The article continues:

Also, the company has installed steel plates at the seawater intake structures for Fukushima reactors 1 through 4, closing off a path for leakage of contaminated water from the reactors to the ocean.

So, judging from the news these last two days, here are the facts and the timetable settled so far:

    1) Radiation levels at the crippled plants are expected to be within safe limits so that human engineers can reenter the plants on July 17, 2011. That's eight days from today.
    2) The contaminated water is being cleaned and contaminated water levels are dropping.
    3) Radioactive water leaks have been stopped.

Of course this disaster at Fukushima is bad. But considering the claims of just a few shorts months, even weeks ago, when Gundersen was claiming:

"Fukushima is the biggest industrial catastrophe in the history of mankind. Fukushima has three nuclear reactors exposed and four fuel cores exposed. You probably have the equivalent of 20 nuclear reactor cores because of the fuel cores, and they are all in desperate need of being cooled, and there is no means to cool them effectively."
Gundersen likes to use words like "maybe" (see above) and words like "probably." That means that he is just guessing. Also, don't look now, but the reactors were being cooled months ago.
As far as being the biggest industrial catastrophe in the history of mankind, I'm sure that is debatable. I'm sure people near the BP oil disaster that has already killed at least eleven men and sickened hundreds, if not thousands, of people; as well as killing wildlife in the hundreds of millions if not more, would strongly disagree with you Gundersen.
So far the death tally from Fukushima nearly four months later: Zero.
These are facts indelibly etched into history...Care to debate me?

Note: In my next post, I blow this, "Fukushima is the biggest industrial catastrophe in the history of mankind" claim to pieces. That claim is pure and total nonsense. How can people be so arrogant and ignorant of history to even entertain such a thought? Read it here.

Nuclear Radiation: No News is Good News

Nuclear radiation and the end of the world is all the rage.

MERLE HAGGARD - THAT'S THE NEWS

Immediately after the nuclear accident at Fukushima, many people were claiming that the government and TEPCO were lying and that there was a coverup.

Well, I've written before - many more times than I care to count - that you can't believe anything the government says... But I've also written just as many times that the government is totally and completely incompetent. I have a hard time believing that such an inept group of people could possibly be so cunning and organized as to plan out a massive coverup and keep it going without being discovered. Think about that. These clowns can't even patch up holes in the road on time and under budget and people think they can pull off massive worldwide conspiracies?

I do believe that the government makes lots of mistakes. It's akin to a guitarist attempting a "Stairway to Heaven" guitar solo and tumbling down a darkened stairwell. Then trying to cover up for their a*s anyway that they can and just shooting from the hip as they go.

    Yes. I believe that.

The folks who keep claiming a government coverup sometimes really surprise me. Remember a few weeks ago when the Japanese government decided to give out over 34,000 geiger counters to school children in Fukushima? Yeah. The anti-nuclear crowd (without thinking this through, I'm sure) were claiming that as proof that they were right all along and that this event proved that things were worse than the government reported.

If that is proof that things are worse than the Japanese government has reported, then I have a few questions:

For one, what good does it do to give a Geiger counter to a school child? It's not going to protect them at all and are they trained to use one correctly? Just asking.

Two, if the government were lying and covering up the levels of radiation, then why in the world would they give out Geiger counters to over 34,000 kids and have them all walking around with a method to prove that the government is lying?

And three, if the radiation is so bad, and having these Geiger counters will prove it, then why haven't we heard even one report of a kid finding alarmingly high radiation levels in those areas near Fukushima?

Like I said, when it comes to nuclear radiation, no news is good news.

But, on that note, a while back, some hysterical "scientists" claimed that the radiation we are being bombarded with "cannot be detected with a Geiger counter" (Seriously, if you use your brain for even a half a second, the concept of "dangerous radiation that cannot be detected by a Geiger counter" is just laughable). In Radioactive Air Filters in Cars, I quoted and commented on a ridiculous article from Al Jazeera:

According to Gundersen, the exposed reactors and fuel cores are continuing to release microns of caesium, strontium, and plutonium isotopes. The hot particles on them can eventually lead to cancer.

"We are discovering hot particles everywhere in Japan, even in Tokyo," he said. "Scientists are finding these everywhere. Over the last 90 days these hot particles have continued to fall and are being deposited in high concentrations. A lot of people are picking these up in car engine air filters."

The hot particles on them can eventually lead to cancer.

"These get stuck in your lungs or GI tract, and they are a constant irritant," he explained, "One cigarette doesn't get you, but over time they do. These [hot particles] can cause cancer, but you can't measure them with a Geiger counter.

Wait a minute, Grandpa! You just put your foot in your mouth again... What's this? You are quoted as saying at least three stupid things in one breath here:

In one part you say about "Hot particles" that:

    "Scientists are finding these everywhere."

Yet, you do not name these scientists. All the while you say that these "Hot Particles" are dangerous you also claim:

"...you can't measure them (hot particles) with a Geiger counter."

Riiiiiiight. They are radioactive and dangerous but we can't measure them witha Geiger counter!? Earth to Gundersen! Earth to Gundersen! According to Wikipedia about "Hot Particles", under the heading "Attributes" it clearly states:

Hot particles can be identified by a Geiger counter, or by autoradiography. Their age and origin can be determined by their isotopic signature.

Now, I see where certain restaurants and food producers are using Geiger Counters to show that their food is safe and it is really boosting business. Fools! Don't they know that the really dangerous radiation cannot be detected by Geiger Counters? (EXTREMELY HEAVY SARCASM).

Chen Lu was Radiation Man and Marvel Comic. It wasn't
popular as a comic, but sure does great as the news!

As an aside, the pumps at Fukushima have been started up and, after some hiccups, are running as planned. But "as planned" is not usually newsworthy. Not running as planned is.

It's good that people are unaware of the real problem that earth faces and that is deadly mega radiation from Mars (as reported in Space Radiation Too Deadly for Mars Mission*)... Now there's a real problem for humanity! Oh? You don't know about it? That's because it cannot be detected by Geiger counters or other earthly devices.

If you fear this scourge, then go home and cover yourselves under your blankets as that's the only safe place left. As for me, I'm going outside and enjoying what's left of my short life on this wonderful planet.

I hope you do the same. It's going to be a wonderful day if you make it that way!

    ----------

*= Wait a minute! If the radiation is too deadly for a Mars mission, thenhow did they go to the moon? Is radiation from the sun different on the moon as opposed to on Mars? Just asking.

Stunning Revelation! Tokyo Man Grows Testicles Out of Cranium! Fukushima Radiation?

Shocking Revelation! Man in Tokyo with testicles on his head stuns onlookers!

Train passengers in the greater Tokyo metropolitan area were shocked on their morning commute today by the appearance of what seems to be an elder gentleman who has testicles protruding from his cranium.

"He looks somewhat like a shriveled upside down penis!" shrieked one woman.

A spokesperson, who wished to remain anonymous, tried to calm passengers and the public at large by reassuring those that these recent sightings of the "Testicle Headed Man" were not related in any way to the Fukushima nuclear accident.

Train poster of the Testicle Headed man

Still many of the western press and the anal retentive segments of the foreign community in Japan insist that there is a government cover up and conspiracy. Some were quoted as saying, "They found rabbits without ears, and car air filters that were radioactive, didn't they?"

One commuter, a businessman in his late 40's said, "I've heard of people being called 'dick-head' but this is taking it one step too far. Something must be done."

This reporter, a longtime expert on Japan and drinking stories, has investigated these occurrences and found several examples in Japanese folklore of sightings such as this strange creature.

Call this guy a "dickhead" and he might rip your arms off

As other countries besides Japan have their legendary creatures too. Some examples are the Abominable Snowman, Big Foot, the Loch Ness Monster and Elvis Presley.

Upon further examination, though, this reporter finds that the "Testicle Headed Man" is indeed a Dickhead and a relic of sexist Japanese advertising and marketing for supposed "Health Drinks" are are to help tired Japanese salary men to become energetic while entertaining the mirage that these drinks can also help their flagging libido.

Besides, doing something to help even psychologically with a sagging member, the drinks also help older Japanese men's flagging self-image and tries to convince them that if they drink this stuff, they might get a young girlfriend.

As I said, it's not real. It's all just a legend and a part of some old guy's  imagination.

These old guys can still dream, can't they?

Return of the Coal Industry & Massive Health Problems & Deaths Because of it

Who hasn't heard the proverb, "Be careful of what you wish for, because you just might get it?"

You might have also heard what Friedrich Nietzsche wrote: "He who fights with monsters might take care lest he thereby become a monster."

Now, after the accident of Fukushima, many people seem desperately to be wishing for a end to nuclear power the world over - forever. I don't. In spite of all its warts, nuclear power is still a young technology that should get better, cleaner and safer as time progresses (if the government gets out of the way) and, as I've written many times, the worst thing that could ever happen to us would be to lose a cheap source of clean energy.
Pinocchio - When You Wish Upon a Star
Anyone who thinks for a moment what the alternatives are - and has a grasp on business concepts like cost effectiveness - would know that the alternatives are not good.

Think what you would do... Think what you will do when your gasoline, heating and energy, and grocery bills go up double or triple in the next five to ten years as the price of oil and energy skyrocket?

That's what's going to happen without nuclear power...And people are wishing for this? Madness.

In a previous post, I quoted Seth Godin. The post was entitled, For Every One Death Due to Nuclear Power, 4,000 Die Due to Coal. Seth Godin wrote in Triumph of Coal Marketing comparing deaths due to various energy sources compared by terrawatt hour:

For every person killed by nuclear power generation, 4,000 die due to coal, adjusted for the same amount of power produced...

Seth also links on to another article and chart showing the statistics comparing deaths due to differing energy sources. Interestingly, in one example, even though Solar power accounts for less than 0.1% of world energy and nuclear is 5.9% of world energy, more than ten times more people die annually from Solar power than nuclear power.

The lesson of that post was the fact that people today believing nuclear power is much more dangerous to human health than coal or the oil industry is is a triumph of big business marketing by those coal and oil industries.

    My final comment was:

When you live in western society and whenever the facts do not bear out what you believe, you can bet your bottom dollar that most probably tens of millions, if not hundreds of millions of dollars have been spent on marketing, advertising and promotion to help create the ideas that you believe.

It's true. Oil and coal kill many more people worldwide annually than nuclear energy does (and that doesn't include millions of middle eastern men, women and children killed by the west over these last 20 years in order to allow the USA and her western allies to control the oil). Yet people in the west do not protest about the coal industry or oil industry and the wars... But they will lose their diapers over nuclear power.

It is a gross hypocrisy of the west and western people. When will they ever learn that their thoughts are so controlled by the mass media?

    From the Next Big Future:

Worldwide, indoor smoke from solid fuel combustion causes about 21% of deaths from lower respiratory infections, 35% of deaths from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and about 3% of deaths from lung cancer.
Indoor air pollution from solid fuel use and urban outdoor air pollution are estimated to be responsible for 3.1 million premature deaths worldwide every year and 3.2% of the global burden of disease.
In the year 2004, outdoor air pollution in urban areas was responsible for almost 1.2 million deaths (2% of all deaths) and 0.6% of the global burden of disease. Transportation-related air pollution, which is a significant contributor to total urban air pollution, increases the risks of cardiopulmonary-related deaths and non-allergic respiratory disease. Some evidence supports an association of transportation-related air pollution with increased risks of lung cancer, myocardial infarction, increased inflammatory response and adverse pregnancy outcomes (e.g. premature birth and low birth weight).
Exposure to particulate matter, including metals, has been linked to a range of adverse health outcomes, including modest transient changes in the respiratory tract and impaired pulmonary function, increased risk of symptoms requiring emergency room or hospital treatment, and increased risk of death from cardiovascular and respiratory diseases or lung cancer. Particulate matter is estimated to cause about 8% of deaths from lung cancer, 5% of deaths from cardiopulmonary disease and about 3% of deaths from respiratory infections.

These deaths are directly linked to pollutants in our air, water and food. The biggest contaminant and cause of pollution in our air is directly from the coal or oil industries.
Now, governments of some nations like Germany have promised to phase out nuclear power. What fools. What, pray tell, are their alternative energy sources going to be?

If anyone claims that renewable energy sources can meet our needs by mid-century. Wrong! This just in:

Steve McIntyre has uncovered a blunder on the part of Pachauri and the IPCC that is causing waves of doubt and calls for retooling on both sides of the debate. In a nutshell, the IPCC made yet another inflated claim that:
…80 percent of the world‘s energy supply could be met by renewables by mid-century…
Unfortunately, it has been revealed that this claim is similar to the Himalayan glacier melt by 2035 fiasco, with nothing independent to back it up. Worse, it isn’t the opinion of the IPCC per se, but rather that of Greenpeace. It gets worse.
Steve McIntyre discovered the issue and writes this conclusion:
It is totally unacceptable that IPCC should have had a Greenpeace employee as a Lead Author of the critical Chapter 10, that the Greenpeace employee, as an IPCC Lead Author, should (like Michael Mann and Keith Briffa in comparable situations) have been responsible for assessing his own work and that, with such inadequate and non-independent ‘due diligence’, IPCC should have featured the Greenpeace scenario in its press release on renewables.
Everyone in IPCC WG3 should be terminated and, if the institution is to continue, it should be re-structured from scratch.
Those are strong words from Steve. Read his entire report here.
Well if renewable sources cannot meet our needs, then what's left? Aha! Oil and Coal! Wow! How about that? Who'd a thunk it?
The future of Oil? Wonderful! Not for supply, or for you mundanes who have to buy the stuff to live, but for the oil companies and their shareholders the future looks very bright. Read, Peak oil: 'Nothing to worry about' – but Labour knew the real facts.

That leaves us with coal. Oh yes, What everyone has been wishing for. A return to nature! Coal comes from the earth. It is natural! Besides how Seth Godin showed above that for every person killed by nuclear energy, 4,000 die from coal energy, here's a glimpse of how healthy coal is for you and your kids: The Dangers of Coal-Burning Power Plants.

Everyone screams for an end to nuclear power. They scream that the Japanese government is lying about the situation. They scream that the end is near. And, yet, the fact remains that no one has yet died from the Fukushima nuclear accident. Some claim that tens of thousands will die over the next 20 ~ 30 years due to Fukushima. Oh really? What about actual deaths from fossil fuels? The Yarra Valley Climate Action Group collating data from all over the world have come up with this:

"0.3 million people die annually world-wide from societally-imposed, fossil fuel-based electricity generation pollutants (carbon monoxide, sulphur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, particulates, volatile organics and heavy metals, notably mercury) and 170,000 people die annually world-wide from coal burning-based electricity generation..."

Throw in that (about) 333,000 (0.3 million) in with the 170,000 and the 3 million worldwide stated above, and you start showing some real problems with fuel based energy production and pollutants. That's a total of over 3.4 million worldwide last year alone. Deaths from Chernobyl?
From the Chernobyl GMN6 (Russian site) these figures that have been hotly debated by both sides:

30 lives were lost during the accident or within a few months after it. Figures from the Ukraine Radiological Institute suggest that over 2500 deaths were caused by the accident...

Now, the hypocrisy and arrogance of the anti-nuclear crowd (who was also the believers in AGW just a few years ago) is coming to a fore and we're heading down a dangerous path towards economic and environmental ruin. Again, what are you going to do when your fuel, gas and grocery bills begin to skyrocket? What are we going to do without a cheap clean renewable source of energy? Don't look now, but the situation in China will surely have huge ramifications on the rest of the world.

    From Gregor.us entitled, "
China Coal and the Great Doubling": Back in 2005 it was clear to a number of observers that China’s trailing rate of coal consumption was so strong, that its demand was on course to double by the end of the decade. As of 2010, this is precisely what’s happened. From a jump between 2002-2003, around 850 Mtoe (million tonnes oil equivalent), China is now consuming 1713.5 Mtoe as of last year, according to the BP Statistical Review. | see: China Coal Consumption in Mtoe 2000-2010.

It only took China 7-8 years to achieve this great doubling. While the sustainability of this rate of growth is certainly in doubt, it bears mentioning that last year a number of global coal producers increased production to help China meet its needs. Indonesia, in particular, raised its production of coal by an almost insane 20% over 2009. Indeed, a number of the regions that I have previously identified as having deep, recoverable reserves raised production in 2010 by substantial margins. The global transition back to coal is fully on course, with a veritable second Age of Coal now on the horizon.

Yes. Yes. Quite wonderful. The return of the coal based industry and industrial production of coal. Coal and oil use skyrockets just when everyone is screaming for an end to the nuclear industry. China doubles their coal production and use; many nations begin to follow suit. The price of oil continues to rise.

You know, there was a time when everyone was screaming to use nuclear power in the late 1960's and 70's because the oil and coal industry were ruining the environment.

On a practical sense, the increase in use of coal and increase in price of gas means a huge rise in the cost of living. This also means a return to greatly polluted skies, rivers and oceans. This pollution also means a huge increase in the rates of a variety of cancers, lung disorders and heart diseases. As the use of oil and coal increase, as is proven by history, deaths from these sources will greatly increase.

This is not conjecture. It is proven by historical record.

It also has an ironic positive note for those with a socialist bent, when prices go way up, consumption goes way down. The thinking goes that, when everyone is poor, this cuts down on pollution - though the record of the old Soviet Union and China don't seem to bear out these ideas.

You wish for a permanent end to nuclear power? Be careful of what you wish for. For you just might get it.
