Emperor of Japan and the Train Geeks

Yahoo Japan reports that the Emperor of Japan and his wife rode the Japan Railways Train for the first time in two years on the 26th of September.

Trust that in this very enigmatic and ancient country (and sometimes quite often totally bizarro), this is a big deal. You wouldn't think of the Emperor and Empress of Japan along the lines of a huge star like Michael Jackson and such, but, in Japan, they are. Throngs go out to see them wherever they go.

Imperial Train arrives

But that's not the bizarre part.

The bizarre part is the "Tetsudo Otaku" or "Train Geeks." That's right. The "Train Geeks." These are the guys whose hobby is to photograph the various Japanese train lines from millions of different angles and post them on their internet sites. Here's one example. The Train Geeks are hard core fans of rare and unusual trains. Trust that there is no more rare and unusual train in Japan than the one that the Emperor and Empress travel on. The reason being is that this train rarely leaves the roundhouse on tours these days. Also, as one geek wrote, "The train was so shiny! It's was polished on all sides like mirrors. There wasn't a speck of dust!"

Jeepers! Golly! Wow!

In the old days, this train traveled the rails often. But in recent years, due to over-crowding, the regular train rails are filled to capacity and the royal pair often take a train.

They have also, god forbid, had to ride the regular trains too... But, unlike someone like Michael Jackson, they would get an entire car to themselves (Michael Jackson and such would never ride the trains with regular riff raff like you and me). So, when the Emperor and Empress of Japan get on a train at, say, Shibuya station it is a big deal with security and police out in the thousands.

So, now the Geek news in Japan is when and where the imperial couple will ride the train next...

Not only do the regular Japanese want to see the imperial couple, but the Train Geeks want to get that special photo to place on their own website.

Marketing Japan: The Next King of Music is Born - and She's Japanese

By Mike in Tokyo Rogers

Move over Elvis Presley and Michael Jackson... And, you too, better roll over Beethoven. The next king of  music has been born and he's not a he, he's a she... And she's not even human.

Meet Hatsune Miku. Hatsune means "first sound" and Miku means "music." She was "born" August 31, 2007. "Hatsune Miku is the next superstar of music. She does everything and is the embodiment of everything that pop music aspires to be...

Hatsune Miku

She can sing, compose music, play all instruments and doesn't need an agent or a manager. She is the ultimate rock star. She is the ultimate Pop Idol. And she doesn't even really exist.

Since she doesn't really exist, her music and songs are all free. There is no copyright for her music.

Today, I went to a meeting at Japan's #1 music TV station, Music On! TV (no, MTV is dead last in this country!) There I met with a man with a vision. His name is Youichi Endo. Endo san introduced me to Hatsune Miku. Now, I'm introducing her to you.

Do you remember in the movie, "Blade-runner"? The girl Rachel? Well, I say, "girl" but was she really a girl or was she an android? Do you remember at the end of the movie thinking, "Wait a minute! Is Rachel human?" I did.

Well, you will think the same thing about Hatsune Miku.

Hatsune Miku sings, and can play, but she doesn't really exist. She is an android. Miku is what is being termed as a Vocaloid. She has a voice synthesizer... In fact, many of the numbers she does feature voices as instrumentation as a sort of Sci-Fi acapella.

Here is what Wikipedia says about "Vocaloid":

Vocaloid is a singing synthesizer application developed by the Yamaha Corporation that enables users to synthesize singing by typing in lyrics and melody. It utilizes Yamaha's Vocaloid synthesizing technology with specially recorded vocals of voice actors or singers.

Hatsune Miku is causing a sensation now in Japan and in Europe, especially France, where her songs have been picked up and are covered by real-life musicians. Some of the most bizarre stuff is on Karaoke in Japan too!

Hatsune Miku "performing" Sebastian Bach "Fugue in G"

The cultural impact of Hatsune Miku cannot be over-stated, folks. This is a real revolution in music. If real humans playing music is considered "Music 1.0". Then remix DJ's sampling music could be considered "Music 2.0." Then, taking the logical progression one step further, then Vocaloid music or Hatsune Miku could be considered "Music 5.0." It is music without rights... Anyone is free to use any track as they see fit. There is no ownership. This music is community owned, so no one person can own it.

This will revolutionize the music industry. Once again, from Wikipedia:

As the recognition and popularity of the software grew, Nico Nico Douga became a place for collaborative content creation. Popular original songs written by a user would generate illustrations, animation in 2D and 3D, and remixes by other users. Other creators would show their unfinished work and ask for ideas.

(Nico Nico Douga is like a YouTube members only community in Japan).

The impact of Hatsune Miku and soon to be coming "artists" like her will surely change the world as we know it. There will surely be ”musicians" who pooh-pooh what I have written here as nonsense, but mark my words; "Hatsune Miku is a music revolution that is coming very soon."

Hatsune Miku has several videos on YouTube that have over two million views! Not bad for a girl who doesn't even get up in the mornings.

My musician friends... Think about that!

Marketing Japan: Apple iPhone 4 More Reliable than 3GS!!!...

By Mike in Tokyo Rogers

Well the results are in. Fortune magazine reports that customer satisfaction with the new iPhone 4 is a disastrously low 93%...

93%!? That's not low... That's great! Er, wait a minute. Let me re-check those stats... Let's see here. ...Yep. That's what it says, 93%.... 93% customer satisfaction!? That's great!

The article says:

"ChangeWave poll finds 93% satisfied with their new iPhone, down from 99% last year."

Yeah, I guess those are disastrous numbers.... I mean if you are a kick a*s company like Apple Computers. If you were most any other USA company like Ford, Microsoft, Chevrolet, General Motors, (your pet peeve American company's name here), you'd probably be happy if 60% of your customers didn't want to go postal on you at one time or another during the calendar year.

Yeah, disastrous. Last year's customer satisfaction with iPhone 3GS was 99%... I guess if they didn't hit 100% this year, it would have to be considered a failure.

Yeah right. Failure. Michael Jackson's "Thriller", the biggest selling album in music history, sat at number one on the Billboard charts for 37 weeks and sold more than 25 million records in 1982. Second only to West Side Story.

Disastrous results with only 18 million albums sold!

Jackson's following album, "Bad", only sold something in the neighborhood of 18 million records, so, I guess compared to Thriller, many people thought "Bad" was a failure.

Fortune Magazine surveyed 213 new iPhone 4 owners and the results were excellent. The biggest surprise was that, in spite of claims, the iPhone 4 was more reliable than the iPhone 3GS, when it came to dropped telephone calls than the iPhone!

"The biggest surprise, however, was that when iPhone 4 owners were asked how frequently they had experienced dropped calls, the results were actually lower than when iPhone 3GS owners were asked the same question last year: 5.2% vs. 6.3%, a 17.46% reduction in reported dropped calls."

Now isn't that a nice surprise!

I did write before that I thought it wasn't good that my hero Steve Jobs made excuses, but I am very happy to hear this news...

Especially since I nightly stick pins in my Bill Gates voodoo doll.

Good news for Apple. Now, for the next iPhone, let's go for 120% customer satisfaction! If any American company could pull that off, Apple can!
